Description
Shako System 13 Normally Open Solenoid Armature Assembly – 225 Series
The Shako System 13 normally open armature assembly is a 2/2 way failsafe-open solenoid operator designed for Shako 225 Series brass and stainless steel solenoid valves and other compatible valves using a System 13, M20 × 1mm mounting.
This second-generation patented Shako design uses a lighter, spring-balanced three-piece stainless steel normally open armature assembly, developed to reduce solenoid coil operating temperature by more than 20°C when energised. Lower coil temperature can help extend coil service life and reduce long-term replacement costs.
Available with a standard copper shading ring for AC and DC operation, or without a shading ring for DC-only applications involving aggressive or corrosive media.
The assembly can also be used to convert compatible 2/2 way normally closed Shako 225 Series solenoid valves to normally open operation.

In its normal de-energised state, the armature is configured for normally open / failsafe open operation.
When the solenoid coil is energised, the magnetic field moves the armature against the spring mechanism to operate the valve into its closed position.
When electrical power is removed, the spring mechanism returns the valve to its normally open state.
Normally Closed to Normally Open Conversion
A particularly useful feature of this assembly is its ability to convert a compatible Shako 225 Series normally closed solenoid valve into normally open operation.
It fits Shako brass and stainless steel:

It is also suitable for other compatible solenoid valves using the Shako System 13 armature arrangement with an M20 × 1mm mounting thread.
This provides a useful conversion or repair option where the existing valve body and diaphragm assembly remain serviceable.

Where WRAS compliance is required, the complete valve configuration and applicable approval should be checked rather than assuming approval from the replacement armature component alone.
Shading Ring Options
Copper Shading Ring – Standard
The standard armature assembly uses a copper shading ring and is suitable for AC and DC coil voltages.
Without Shading Ring – Aggressive Media
For aggressive or corrosive media where a copper shading ring is undesirable, an armature assembly without a shading ring is available.
This version is for DC coil operation only.
Copper Shading Ring → AC or DC
No Shading Ring → DC only
Why AC Requires the Shading Ring
With an AC solenoid coil, the magnetic field continually varies as the alternating supply passes through each electrical cycle.
The copper shading ring helps maintain sufficient magnetic attraction through the AC zero crossing, reducing armature chatter and helping maintain stable operation.
A DC solenoid does not require this AC shading function, allowing the shading ring to be omitted where required for media compatibility.

Helpful Hint
Not sure whether you need the copper shading ring?
For AC coils, select the standard copper shading ring version.
For DC coils, either version can operate, but the no-shading-ring version is particularly useful where the controlled media is incompatible with copper.
If replacing an existing armature, check the 14.5mm tube diameter and M20 × 1mm mounting thread before ordering.
Why Choose the Shako Normally Open Armature?
Unlike simply replacing a worn operator with the same component, this assembly can also provide a practical means of changing a compatible 225 Series valve from normally closed to normally open operation.
The patented lighter spring-balanced design also addresses one of the disadvantages of normally open solenoid valves: the potentially long periods for which the coil remains energised while holding the valve closed.
