Gas Interlock Solenoid Valves for Commercial Kitchens: A Buyer's Guide
If you are fitting out or upgrading a commercial catering kitchen in the UK, the gas safety shut-off valve is one of the most important components you will specify. Under BS 6173 — the standard covering the installation of gas-fired catering appliances in commercial premises — any kitchen with mechanical extract ventilation is expected to have a gas interlock system. At the heart of that system sits a normally closed solenoid valve that isolates the gas supply whenever conditions are unsafe. This guide explains how the interlock works and how to choose the right valve for it.
What a gas interlock system actually does
The principle is simple: gas should only be available to the appliances when the extraction is proven to be running and the kitchen is being ventilated correctly. If the extract fan fails, is switched off, or airflow drops below a safe threshold, the interlock cuts the gas. The same applies if an emergency stop button is pressed or, on more complete systems, if a carbon monoxide or gas detector triggers an alarm.
A typical interlock brings together an air-proving sensor on the extract duct, a control panel, one or more emergency stop buttons, and a gas safety shut-off solenoid valve on the incoming supply. The control panel only energises the valve — holding it open — when every condition is satisfied. Remove power for any reason and the valve springs closed. This "de-energise to close" behaviour is exactly why a normally closed (NC) valve is used: loss of power is treated as an unsafe state, so the safe default is no gas.
Manual reset or automatic reset?
Gas safety shut-off valves come in two broad styles, and choosing between them is one of the first decisions to make. A manual reset valve stays closed after any trip or power loss until someone physically resets it by hand, which forces a person to check the kitchen before gas is restored. An automatic reset valve re-opens as soon as the interlock re-energises it. Many specifiers prefer manual reset for catering safety because it prevents gas returning unattended after a fault; automatic reset can be appropriate where the whole system, including proving, is designed to fail safe.

Certification: look for EN 161
Automatic shut-off valves for gas burners and gas appliances are covered by EN 161. A valve carrying this approval has been tested for closing behaviour and seat tightness against the requirements for gas safety duty, which is not something a general-purpose water or air valve can claim. When you are buying for a gas application, insist on an EN 161 approved valve rather than repurposing a standard solenoid valve — the seal materials, closing force and leak-tightness are specified for fuel gases. Sizing the valve to the kitchen
A gas safety valve must pass the full gas demand of every appliance downstream without an excessive pressure drop, otherwise burners will starve at peak load. In practice the valve is matched to the incoming pipe size — commonly quoted in BSP or DN — and to the total gas throughput of the kitchen. As a rule of thumb, do not fit a valve smaller than the supply pipework, and always work from the combined gas rate of the appliances rather than a single burner. Pressure and gas type
Confirm the valve is rated for your inlet pressure. Most commercial kitchens run on low-pressure natural gas, but LPG installations and larger gas trains can sit at higher pressures, so check the valve's maximum operating pressure against your supply. Also confirm the valve is approved for your fuel — natural gas (methane) and LPG (propane/butane) have different characteristics, and a good gas valve datasheet will state the gas family it is certified for. Electrical and installation points
Most commercial gas safety valves are supplied for a 230 V AC supply to suit UK panels, though other coil voltages are available for bespoke control systems. Because the coil is energised continuously while the kitchen is in use, choose a valve with a coil rated for continuous duty and adequate cooling — a valve that runs warm to the touch is normal, but one that overheats is undersized or wrongly rated. Fit the valve the right way round for flow direction, keep it accessible for manual reset and inspection, and always leave commissioning, tightness testing and interlock verification to a registered Gas Safe engineer. A quick specification checklist
Before you order, confirm the following: the valve is normally closed so it fails safe on power loss; it is EN 161 approved for gas; you have chosen manual or automatic reset deliberately; the size and pressure rating match your pipework and gas demand; the coil voltage suits your interlock panel; and the valve is certified for your gas type. Getting these six points right is the difference between a compliant, reliable installation and a callback.
