Description
Cryogenic Normally Open Solenoid Valve 0–200 Bar – ERA-SIB WFCRYO
The ERA-SIB WFCRYO Series is a specialist 2/2 way normally open cryogenic solenoid valve designed for reliable control of cryogenic liquids at temperatures down to -196°C. Its fail-open design means the valve remains open without electrical power and closes when the solenoid is energised.
Featuring direct-acting, zero-pressure operation, the WFCRYO can operate from 0 Bar without requiring a minimum pressure differential. Eight different orifice options provide working pressures from 15 Bar up to 200 Bar, allowing the valve to be selected according to the required balance between pressure capability and flow.
Manufactured from stainless steel with stainless steel internals and PTFE cryogenic sealing, the WFCRYO is designed for demanding low-temperature applications involving liquid nitrogen, liquid oxygen, liquid argon, LNG and other compatible cryogenic media.
Valve Function & Operation
Function: 2/2 way normally open
Operation: Direct acting
Fail-safe position: Open
Electrical operation: Power to close
The WFCRYO remains open when de-energised and closes when electrical power is applied to the solenoid. If electrical power is lost, the valve automatically returns to its normally open position.
Direct-acting construction allows the valve to operate from zero pressure differential, making it suitable for cryogenic systems where a pilot-operated valve would be unsuitable.
Ports & Connections
Port sizes:
1/8" BSP
1/4" BSP
Optional connection:
NPT thread
The valve is available with multiple orifice sizes to provide different pressure and flow characteristics without changing the basic cryogenic valve design.
Pressure & Orifice Options
Maximum operating pressure depends upon the selected orifice:
0.6mm orifice: 0 to 200 Bar
0.8mm orifice: 0 to 130 Bar
0.9mm orifice: 0 to 100 Bar
1.0mm orifice: 0 to 70 Bar
1.2mm orifice: 0 to 50 Bar
1.5mm orifice: 0 to 35 Bar
2.0mm orifice: 0 to 20 Bar
2.2mm orifice: 0 to 15 Bar
This provides engineers with a choice between maximum pressure capability and increased flow capacity. Smaller orifices provide the highest operating pressures, while larger orifices are available where greater flow is required at lower pressures.
Cryogenic Temperature Range
Media temperature: -196°C to +100°C
Ambient temperature: Up to +50°C
Maximum media viscosity: 40 cSt
The -196°C minimum media temperature makes the WFCRYO suitable for extremely low-temperature cryogenic liquid applications.
Construction & Materials
Body: Stainless steel
Internal components: Stainless steel
Seal material: PTFE
Coil encapsulation: Moulded resin
The combination of stainless steel construction and PTFE sealing provides the low-temperature capability required for cryogenic fluid control while also providing corrosion resistance for demanding industrial installations.
Cryogenic Media Compatibility
Suitable for compatible cryogenic media including:
✓ Liquid Nitrogen – LN₂
✓ Liquid Oxygen – LOX
✓ Liquid Argon – LAr
✓ Liquefied Natural Gas – LNG
✓ Cryogenic Liquids
✓ Cryogenic Industrial Gases
Media compatibility should always be confirmed against the stainless steel construction, PTFE sealing and operating conditions.
For liquid oxygen service, appropriate oxygen-cleaning requirements and the complete valve configuration should be confirmed before ordering.

Opening time: 20ms maximum
Closing time: 20ms maximum
Duty cycle: 100% ED
Mounting position: Vertical, coil uppermost
Electrical protection: IP65 with connector fitted
Electrical connection: DIN 43650A
The fast direct-acting mechanism provides switching times of up to 20 milliseconds, making the WFCRYO suitable for automated cryogenic control systems requiring rapid response.
Coil & Electrical
DC coil power: 22W
AC power:
48VA inrush
24VA holding
Insulation: Class H 185°C
Duty cycle: 100% continuous duty
Protection: IP65
Connection: DIN 43650A
Construction: Moulded resin encapsulated coil
The high-temperature Class H coil is physically separated from the cryogenic process by the valve's extended construction, allowing reliable electrical operation while the process media may be as cold as -196°C.
Voltage Options
DC:
✓ 12VDC
✓ 24VDC
AC 50/60Hz:
✓ 24VAC
✓ 48VAC
✓ 110VAC
✓ 230VAC
Alternative voltages may be available according to the required valve configuration.
Normally Open Fail-Safe Design
The normally open configuration differentiates the WFCRYO from conventional normally closed cryogenic solenoid valves.
With no electrical power applied, the valve remains open.
When the coil is energised, the valve closes and isolates the flow.
This power-to-close arrangement is useful where the required process safety philosophy calls for the valve to return automatically to an open position following electrical power failure.

High-Pressure Cryogenic Design
Controlling cryogenic liquids presents considerably different challenges from conventional ambient-temperature fluid control.
The WFCRYO combines stainless steel construction, PTFE cryogenic sealing and direct-acting operation to provide reliable switching at temperatures down to -196°C.
The availability of eight orifice sizes is particularly useful for high-pressure applications. The 0.6mm version can operate at pressures up to 200 Bar, while progressively larger orifices provide increased flow capacity where lower maximum pressure ratings are acceptable.
Installation
Install the valve vertically with the solenoid coil uppermost.
Ensure the selected valve orifice has the required pressure rating for the application.
All pipework should be clean and free from contamination before installation, and consideration should be given to the significant thermal contraction that occurs in cryogenic piping systems.
For oxygen applications, specify the appropriate cleaned configuration and confirm the complete installation requirements before use.
Optional Configurations
Available options include:
✓ NPT threaded ports
✓ Alternative orifice sizes
✓ Multiple pressure ratings
✓ Alternative supply voltages
The correct orifice should be selected according to both the required maximum operating pressure and flow requirement.
Why Choose the ERA-SIB WFCRYO?
The ERA-SIB WFCRYO has been developed specifically for applications where a conventional industrial solenoid valve cannot tolerate the extremely low temperatures associated with cryogenic liquids.
Its combination of -196°C cryogenic capability, direct acting zero-rated operation, normally open fail-safe function and pressures up to 200 Bar provides an unusual solution for demanding cryogenic control applications.
Stainless steel construction and PTFE sealing provide the required low-temperature performance, while eight available orifice sizes allow the valve to be configured for applications ranging from ultra-high-pressure control to higher-flow lower-pressure service.
